I sat down for an interview with The Clipse earlier this week on The Talk of the Town Morning Show. Even though, they came to the station to promote the new Re Up Gang CD, it didn't really seem like I was interviewing them. The conversation seemed more like a round table discussion as the Brothers Thornton and I discussed issues that went beyond the standard "So who can we expect on your CD" type interview. I guess since I have interviewed them countless numbers of times before this, I wanted to get at them about some issues that I felt were pertinent to our hometown of Hampton Roads VA, but also still get some information about the status of the group and their current label situations at Koch and Columbia Records.
I believe that this interview will shed some light for a lot of people who wonder why more artists do not come out of Virginia. Everyone knows that some of the hottest producers in the industry like The Neptunes, Timbaland, Danjzhandz, Nottz, Missy and others have all come from Virginia. But when you look at the number of artists who actually make it from the area, you will notice that every major artist who has come from Virginia in the last few years has been from the Richmond area. Trey Songz, Chris Brown, and Governor are all from the 804 area code. For those who have never been to Va, The Clipse and I as well as the producers that I named are all from an area commonly known as "The 757"and we are located about an hour and a half south of Richmond.
In part 1 of the video, we are discussing the Virginia music scene, and how some of the local radio stations have deprived the market of the opportunity to create a niche in the industry because they will not support artists from the area who could possibly make an impact.
In part two we discuss their new clothing line and some of their most memorable Virginia moments. We also talked about the previous CD Hell Hath No Fury, which was critically acclaimed, but did not do so well in terms of sales.
In the final segment of the interview, we talk about their relationship with Pharrell and the Neptunes. In concluding the interview, I ask the fellas how they felt about the current situation that Rick Ross is going through.
